Sewon Screening 11 Teaser: A Critique or a Call to Action?

March, 2025 – Sewon Screening 11 released a teaser under the theme Resistance. The teaser features a woman performing a monologue, where she comes to the realization that she has been living under the shadow of fear. Eventually, she gathers the courage to break free and to fight back.

“The process took less than a week,” said Richard Natan, the director behind the teaser. Despite the brief production time, the teaser presents visuals that provoke interpretation and inquiry. The monologue, with its emphasis on resistance, raises many questions. What exactly is being resisted? What does resistance mean in the context of this teaser? Is it defying parental expectations? Challenging fate? Rebelling against the law? Confronting predatory professors? Or opposing an increasingly overreaching government?

Richard clarified that the form of resistance portrayed in the Sewon Screening 11 teaser is meant for everyone it’s about having the courage to resist even the smallest fears in everyday life. These are fears that have often been normalized and dismissed as mere struggles.

There is no hidden critique directed at any specific party; the resistance depicted in the teaser is universal. “Sewon Screening 11, with its strong commitment from inception to packaging to the festival itself, seeks to educate and restore courage in the form of positive resistance,” Richard emphasized.

Interestingly, the teaser positions a woman at the center of both voice and action a choice that inherently carries a feminist message that cannot be overlooked. It addresses the silencing of women and challenges the long-standing perceptions of women as weak or unequal. In this teaser, the woman speaks out. She is resistance a symbol of the suppression that has long been ingrained in society.

Visual symbols such as an empty room and a solitary spotlight reinforce a sense of confinement a metaphor for individuals living under the control of systems, cultures, or others’ authority. Her intense gaze and expressive demeanor signal an awakening, the first step toward resistance. Midway through, we see the woman perform a theatrical dance. According to Richard, the movement resembles a marionette controlled by strings limp, forced, and drained of energy. This symbolizes individuals who are manipulated by others, moving without autonomy, unable to protest, refuse, or resist.

Technically, the teaser employs a documentary approach with static shots, though certain scenes become more dynamic and dramatic to support the narrative. Beneath all the symbolism and storytelling, Sewon Screening 11’s teaser invites audiences regardless of gender or age to redefine what resistance truly means.
