Diving Back Into the Memories of Sewon Screening

Yogyakarta, September 22, 2026 — Now more than a decade in, the Sewon Screening Film Festival takes up the theme Resonance for its 12th edition. Each year, moments from the festival are archived and shown to visitors at an archive exhibition during the following edition.

This year, the exhibition team has gone beyond documentation and posters. Visitors will also be greeted by unconventional designs in each installation on display, with every booth designed to represent the theme of its respective edition.

One example is the design for Sewon Screening 10, themed Persistence. Drawing on that theme, the exhibition team built a cube-shaped structure holding information about the theme and several films screened that year, representing what the theme stands for: tenacity and steadfastness.

“I made a cube because it feels strong, you know? It’s the foundation of a building,” said a member of the exhibition team. So beyond presenting information about past editions of Sewon Screening, the exhibition also serves as a creative visual medium, one that echoes the ideas behind each edition’s installation.

Alongside the visual exhibition, films from previous editions are screened in the Viewing Booth (Bilik Menonton). Visitors are invited to browse a catalog and choose what they’d like to watch. Not every film in the catalog is available, though. Some files are damaged or lost, and some have been withdrawn by their filmmakers, who no longer allow them to be screened.

Even so, the Viewing Booth still matters. Together with the exhibition, it makes the traces Sewon Screening has left over the years feel present. The archive exhibition shows how a film festival like Sewon Screening has shaped its identity across more than a decade, through a wide range of films, and how it has endured to this day.
