Yogyakarta, April 25, 2026 — “Layar Kenduren” marks the first pre-event activity of Sewon Screening 12. The barriers that once confined memory were gently lifted through the films screened that evening. True to its spirit as a space for boundless remembrance, Layar Kenduren wove itself into the fabric community surrounding Sewon. Through this event, Sewon Screening sought to revive timeless stories from the past, ones that do not fade with time, but instead merge with the future to shape who we are in the present.
This vision aligns with the deeper essence of Layar Kenduren, which serves not only as a platform for films with a warm, familial spirit, but also as an occasion to express gratitude and seek blessing from those closest to Sewon, so that this opening event may unfold smoothly all the way through to September. That spirit of gratitude and goodwill was also brought to life through a traditional tumpeng-cutting ceremony, a symbolic affirmation of Sewon Screening 12’s hope to transform physical bonds into emotional ones.
The values Sewon Screening holds dear proved to be more than just words. Last night’s Layar Kenduren unfolded beautifully. Held in Kaliputih Village, the event was met with great enthusiasm by local residents, many of whom already accustomed to embracing film screenings in their community. This was evident in the excitement of the children and the attentive presence of adults in the crowd. Mr. Sarjiman, the neighborhood head of Kaliputih Village, even expressed in his opening remarks his hope that the event would bring meaningful benefits to the local children.
The warm reception Sewon Screening received was not simply the result of the community’s familiarity with such events, it was equally the product of the genuine warmth extended by the organizing committee and the filmmakers themselves. The four films screened under the overarching theme of “Remembring Without Barriers” also drew laughter from the audience, their humor rooted in the kind of everyday moments that feel immediately and intimately familiar.
As Bintang, the screenwriter of the film Secarik, shared during the post-screening discussion, the story drew its inspiration from simple child memories experienced by the film’s crew. He expressed his hope that the film would resonate with anyone who has lived through, or is currently navigating a similar chapter in life. The community’s enthusiasm, the committee’s warmth, and the filmmakers’ creative success came together as a meaningful milestone, bringing to life the emotional connection that Layar Kenduren set out to foster from the very beginning.
