Reflections on the Faculty Screenings of Sewon Screening 10: A Spotlight on Artistic Freedom of Expression
- Cheryl Nadia Fawwaz
As we prepare to continue the journey with Sewon Screening 11, it is worth looking back on the previous year to revisit a special moment the tenth edition of Sewon Screening. Over the years, the festival has successfully curated a variety of programs, but two in particular drew significant attention: the Faculty of Visual Arts Screening and the Faculty of Performing Arts Screening. These programs were held on August 1, 2024, at the ISI Yogyakarta Boulevard and on August 10, 2024, at the Visual Arts Faculty Plaza. They presented a compelling lineup of films that invited audiences to reflect on life, personal expression, and the complexities of social relationships. Through the medium of art, the programs offered viewers a powerful emotional experience, touching on the deeper layers of the human condition.
Faculty of Visual Arts Screening
This program was grounded in the concept of acceptance inspired by the philosophy of Stoicism. It focused on the theme of masculinity particularly how it is often restricted in terms of expression, whether verbal or physical. The films showcased male figures who use visual art as a medium of freedom, allowing them to express their identities beyond the limitations of societal norms and stereotypes. Ultimately, this artistic journey led them toward a profound sense of self-acceptance.
The Faculty of Visual Arts Screening succeeded in challenging existing stereotypes around masculinity in the visual arts space. Through the films presented, it provided audiences with new insights into how art can serve as a channel for self-expression and emotional exploration.
Faculty of Performing Arts Screening
This program opened up a new space for freedom of expression an intersection where diverse perspectives from various layers of life could meet. Through the language of performing arts, the films revealed how teamwork and collaboration can produce works that transcend dichotomies and become a shared artistic creation. One of the featured films, Behind the Stage, portrayed the dynamics of collaborative efforts in creating a performance, demonstrating that artistic success relies not only on individual brilliance but also on the synergy among various contributors.
Together, these two programs created a space for artists to engage in deep dialogue and critical reflection on issues of self-expression and identity both of which are often suppressed by dominant social and cultural norms. For many artists, societal structures can be confining, offering little room for diversity of thought and expression. These screenings offered a much-needed opportunity to explore, question, and challenge values shaped by rigid, often exclusionary cultural frameworks.
Looking forward, Sewon Screening 11 will see these programs evolve into Layar Institut, a new platform that will focus on screening works across all faculties at ISI Yogyakarta. This transformation is seen as a progressive move one that fosters inclusivity by bringing together a wide range of artistic expressions under one unified program.
