Anchoring in the City of Atlas: From Communities to the National Stage—Two Open Film Funding Opportunities
- Cheryl Nadia Fawwaz
Sewon Screening 11 returns at the dawn of a new decade. After a successful Layar Tandang debut in the City of Heroes, Surabaya, the festival has now arrived in Semarang the historic City of Atlas. This stop marks another milestone in the vibrancy of local cinema, as Sewon Screening 11 lands with a powerful program and opens not just one, but two doors of opportunity, the Sewon Short Film Fund for community filmmakers, and the Layar Indonesiana Short Film Production Competition with national reach.
The evening began promptly at 6:30 PM, as eager audiences lined up for registration. The warmth of the venue was immediately felt upon entry, with banners of “Layar Tandang Semarang” and “Layar Indonesiana” displayed neatly throughout the room establishing the event’s clear identity.
During the screening, the room was filled with gasps of awe and, at times, quiet sobs from those moved by the stories on screen. As the credits rolled, a wave of applause filled the space. The highlight of the evening came during the post-screening discussion session, where the audience had the chance to engage directly with the filmmakers behind the four showcased films. The questions flowed ranging from creative processes and production challenges to the elusive “secret keys” for passing the Layar Indonesiana selection, strategies for managing tight budgets, and how to find unique angles for the theme of “Narrative Exploration.”
This edition of Layar Tandang Semarang introduced two notable short film funding opportunities: the Sewon Short Film Fund from Sewon Screening and the Short Film Production Competition from Layar Indonesiana, supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture (KEMENBUD).
The Sewon Short Film Fund targets local community filmmakers those who may not yet have access to large-scale funding but bring strong, original ideas to the table. Meanwhile, Layar Indonesiana raises the stakes with a national-level competition under the theme “Narrative Exploration,” offering a fresh challenge for Indonesian filmmakers. These initiatives are more than just funding they are gateways for emerging talent to showcase their abilities, especially those who have long faced resource limitations. By nurturing bold concepts from humble beginnings, both programs create space for voices with a clear and compelling vision.
This Layar Tandang Semarang event also presented a curated program titled Silent Tactic, Loud Impact echoing the festival’s core ethos of “Resistance.” This resistance isn’t confrontational or overt, but manifests in subtle defiance, psychological tension, and perceptual shifts. The title itself suggests that courage doesn’t always need to be loud or visible. Amidst a stifling social climate, resistance can take the form of quiet strategy calculated movements carried out in silence, where every step is a risk. This event was more than just a screening it was proof that cinema remains a powerful and relevant medium for resistance in today’s world.
