Spiral (2024): Small Changes for Something New

As times evolve, so do the demands of life, becoming more complex with each passing day.

People are often forced to adapt quickly, pushed out of their comfort zones. Sometimes they are disturbed, even commanded to run just to keep up with the pace of the world. Some choose to adapt, while others prefer to stay still, wrapped comfortably in their familiar routines. These are all choices neither right nor wrong. Life often presents us with choices, just like what is depicted in the film Spiral.

Spiral is a simple drama film that carries a deeply meaningful message. It begins with a married couple, Wawan and Ida, who run a small food stall that rarely receives customers. Their income is unstable, and they are on the brink of financial crisis. Despite this situation, Wawan refuses to find an additional job. He solely relies on the money earned from their small shop.

Wawan finds it difficult his previous job as a parking attendant was often shut down by the local authorities. Instead of seeking new work, he blames the situation and resists change. He believes his skills are limited to that one field, and he feels ashamed seeing others wear “silly” costumes just to earn a living.

The narrative of this film is honest and closely mirrors the reality many people face. It reflects lives that are trapped in economic hardship and a stagnant mindset. Wawan’s character invites us to reflect: in difficult times, sometimes what’s needed most is a small shift in attitude, rather than mere complaints.

The story grows heavier, as Wawan is gradually forced to accept his situation. In his solitude, he must swallow a bitter pill their money is running out, and their livelihood is hanging by a thread. Yet, even with this somber tone, the film doesn’t feel bleak. A tender moment between Wawan and his child offers a glimmer of hope. Wawan reaches a turning point; he begins to open his eyes to a new reality, to a kind of work he once felt too proud to consider.

Change is often seen as something big, but Spiral reminds us that change doesn’t always have to be drastic. Sometimes, it simply begins with the small courage to accept the reality in front of us, and then take one small step at a time from there. Spiral shows us that even though life may feel like it’s spinning endlessly like the spiral-cut potato Wawan sells there will always be a way out for those who dare to step forward and rise from their comfort zones.
