Loneliness during the pandemic becomes the central theme of Gombal From Home. The film tells the story of Eka, a young man who seeks attention and companionship through a dating application by using a fake identity. At first, the virtual relationship feels exciting and comforting, but the lies he creates slowly give rise to more complicated emotional conflicts.
Through this film, director Egi M. Ginanjar successfully portrays life during the quarantine period in a simple yet realistic way. The interactions through video calls and text messages feel natural, allowing the audience to genuinely sense the loneliness experienced by the main character. The film also touches on the human need for acceptance and the fear of rejection.
Moreover, the cold color palette and restricted settings reinforce the sense of isolation within the film. Even with its minimalistic approach, the film manages to communicate the importance of honesty in a relationship, even those formed solely through virtual connections.
